The long vacant triangular plot at 475 Greenwich Street in Tribeca is finally being developed by Douglaston Development as the Zinc Building. Construction began recently on this seven-story 21 unit condominium we first wrote about last year. The project required and received a zoning variance to allow residential units. According to the web site CityRealty apartments will have 10-to-11 foot ceilings. Finishes will include appliances from Sub-Zero, Asko, Miele, Kohler and Grohe. This long abandoned triangular property bounded by Canal, Watts, and Greenwich Streets will add another modernist condo loft project to the growing list in the area. To the north new buildings such as The Urban Glass House and 255 Hudson Street have helped transform a sleepy part of downtown into a chic residential enclave. The western stretch of Canal is also slowly being refinished piece by piece. The small newly rebuilt Canal Park at West Street was recently opened, and another pocket park is to be created on the vacant strip of land to the east bound by Varick, Canal, and Laight Streets. As for the constant rumble of Canal Street truck traffic, well, that's not going away any time soon...
