DISCOVER ASTORIA STREET ART

by | Nov 19, 2016

Many consider Astoria to be the creative center for Queens. With a plethora of street arts drawn throughout the neighborhood, artists flock here just for the vibrant art scene. Here are some examples of amazing works that are featured within Astoria.photo-1453814235491-3cfac3999928
Historically known as one of the most memorable landmarks in all of Queens, 5 Pointz, a warehouse that was covered in murals, was transformed into a new residential development. 5 Pointz was a hot-spot for Queen’s tourists and artists looking for some inspiration. Don’t fret, Astorians, this Queen’s neighborhood is still covered in creative and unique street art, making it an integral part of the neighborhood.photo-1456718165949-8db05e757006

This neighborhood is filled with vibrant murals that make Astoria one of a kind. The Welling Court Mural Project has insisted on keeping Astoria’s cultural and creative aesthetic. Welling Court works with artists and residential and commercial owners to celebrate the streets, community, and culture of Astoria, Queens. The project is now in its seventh year and has made a significant impact in the creation of street art within the community.

This mural project is run by Ad Hoc Art, a dynamic art gallery that also functions as a design house and cultural think tank to address the obstacles that prevent and restrict social change. The murals are meant to serve and promote dialogue, celebrate the community, and bring a certain culture to the neighborhood (and they’re pretty cool).

The co-founder and director of Ad Hoc Art, Garrison Buxton, leads tours on the weekends, where people can enjoy the beautiful art, while learning about the motivation and purpose behind the art. Try spending the day strolling the streets, while taking in all the culture that is Astoria. Most murals are very large and obvious to find, but other are hidden in the nooks and crannies of the neighborhood (keep your eye out for those sneaky gems).photo-1471169723763-1ab989462fca

Astoria is packed full with artistic and culturally inclined aspects. If you’re looking for other things to do, besides enjoying all the street art, head over to Socrates Sculpture Park. You can stroll through the park while enjoying the stunning views of Manhattan right across the river or even participate in free art-making workshops. Regardless, a day in Astoria will leave you feeling that much more cultured and in-tune with the local community.
